I graduated from Eastern Washington University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication Design.
For my thesis project, I designed an app that asked, “Hey, how are you?” then allowed users to choose a color rather than name a feeling. I always struggled to identify and understand my emotions, but colors made sense to me. I thought other people might relate.
Five years later, I learned about alexithymia, which is commonly experienced by neurodivergent folks (like me!).
This is a photo of me hugging a dolphin. I know it’s not professional, but I thought it would make you smile (:
Neurodivergence is when someone's brain processes, learns, and/or behaves differently from what is considered ‘typical.’
As a neurodivergent (and otherwise marginalized) person, I understand how important it is to be met on your level. In order to communicate clearly, we need to remember that everyone doesn’t think like we do.
I consider myself to be a translator of sorts, helping diverse people to communicate with each other. Our emotions and identities impact the way we send and receive messages, so it’s important to consider factors like neurotype, cultural upbringing, belief system, gender, and more.
In just over five years of experience in design and project management, I have been fortunate enough to work with a variety of clients on a host of projects. I’ve learned a great deal along the way; not just about design, but more importantly, about the people it serves.
On A Personal Note…
I love thinking - it’s probably my favorite thing to do. I muse over ideas like Everlasting Gobstoppers in my mind all. day. long.
If you catch me in the right moment on the right topic, I will talk your ear right off. Don’t be afraid to be honest with me about your energy level or attention span!
I do research for fun, obsess over details, continuously “optimize” my home, and do my best every day.
